Urban Data Challenge took place early this year as a joint effort between swissnex San Francisco, Lift, GAFFTA and opendata.ch. Providing transportation data from the cities of Geneva, Zurich and San Francisco, contestants around the world were asked to create informative but also beautifully designed web apps. Lift, backed by the city of Geneva, brought some of the best ones home for display and discussion during the Open Knowledge Conference.     Back in 1993, graphic designers Markus and Daniel Freitag needed a heavy-duty, functional and water-repellent bag to carry their designs. Inspired by the cheerfully coloured lorries rumbling along the cross-Zurich highway just in front of their flat, they cut a messenger bag out of an old truck tarpaulin. Thus the story of FREITAG began. Today, Daniel and Markus are still making bags in Zürich, 300'000 unique items per year, FREITAG has more than 130 employees, a world-wide distribution network and has become Switzerland's sustainable design icon: a constant drive to innovate their product, design and processes has won them countless design awards and brought their bags to MoMA's famed design collection.
