Guest Mix: Mondkopf

     Paul Régimbeau ...

Paul Régimbeau is the SHAPE-affiliated French producer behind Mondkopf, who has been releasing music under the nom de plume since 2006 on labels such as Perc Trax and Asphalt Duchess. Hadès, his last album as Mondkopf, was released last year on his own In Paradisum imprint, and it saw the producer enhancing his sonic narratives with propulsive rhythms, vivid dynamics, and terrorizing harshness. Régimbeau's latest project is called Extreme Precautions, where he unexpectedly (though seamlessly) trades in abrasive techno for blast beat-influenced dramatics, tearing through 11 untitled tracks on I. The guest mix that Régimbeau graciously made for us, titled Always out to lunch, further articulates his interest in the materiality of sound, exploring contrast through masterful pacing and varying degrees of dissonance. Like his music, it's dark and moody, reorienting suspense and tension as ends unto themselves rather than as the couriers they're so often internalized to be. Artists include Emptyset, Lorenzo Senni, Tod Dockstader, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe/Ariel Kalma, and Peder Mannerfelt. Régimbeau will be performing at two upcoming SHAPE-sponsored events: Schiev Festival in Brussels (November 5-8) and the Némo biennale in Paris (January 2016). He'll be premiering his new duo Autrenoir at Schiev and a piece called "Spero Lucem" at Némo. (Note: the previously-reported RIAM gig is now cancelled.) We've been in contact for a good-minute, but just started going a bit deeper in January when my full-length review writing began heavier, and I put a couple words to the newest Strange Mountain tape. And then Media In Res and +you. But Selecção, Edição e (+) alguma Fusão parte 2½: A (re) collection from, through & to friends came a to me on a whim, as JCCG was like:
These are all unreleased tracks (by now some are already out there, but --yeah) that I asked to the artists for this mix; it belongs to a series of mixes that i´m making as JCCG, here´s the 1st half. C Monster: *[in:trash maxwell.d.allison@gmail.com]* lookin' up your mix-list, papi ;) Mukqs: heheh C Monster: i like the grid of 二千八百八十2015(Mirror Mix). did this help you organize before or after? Mukqs: before. i laid out the tracks in that structure, two-minutes each, and then recorded them to a cassette tape. so each channel of the cassette scrolls through about 11 songs; 44 songs in total, [though] some of them didn't end up appearing in the final take, hence the "-----" C Monster: MYSTERY! we'll never kno! Macula Dog, dawg? i took that post... sorta ;) Mukqs: they're one of my favorites right now. so inspiring C Monster: what was the entire train of thought in 二千八百八十2015(Mirror Mix)? Mukqs: well i've been experimenting with this rig of two loop pedals, processing various sound sources through them in live sessions and i just figured i'd try it with strictly 2015 material. C Monster: did it feel like paradise, or... ? Mukqs: kinda like paradise. like a creepy paradise... the actual performance is improvised, and the way i have the pedal chain set up makes it so I can't hear the dry signal going into the mix, so the only thing i hear are the loops that I blindly make, and then I have to listen and respond to what shows up. any specific lyrics or riffs or melodies that show up are more or less plucked randomly from the cassette tape -- not really curated or selected at all, beyond the initial placement of the tracks in the order on the tape. i think of it as a kind of chance operation. or some weird like tarot card reading in which the prophecy appears in the form of Rich Homie Quan's voice or what have you. Future: definitely a prophet C Monster: yeah, but... Future Brown. thoughts on them for a nickle? (DISCLAIMER: i will not be sending you a nickle) Mukqs: i think that album is great. every time i listen to it, I get deeper into it. i like the variety and the uniformly PRO production. the track that features Sicko Mobb is my favorite C Monster: you're a fucking BABE. final question: what are your ideal setting(s) in which this mix should be listened? Mukqs: hmm -- i would say on headphones, very loud. the mix might be a little quiet overall due to the tape recording process. C Monster: dawg, but what if my headphones are shit?? (fool u, THAT's the final question) Mukqs: dude, my headphones are shit too!!! Guest Mix: Nikolaienko

     Back in ...

Back in June, the dude Birkut premiered the video for Nikolaienko's "Under The Integral," taken off his second full-length The Sound Of Pseudoscience. The album — constructed from a passion of "early electronics' golden era" and built with a laundry list of Soviet era pedals, tape manipulations, and synthesizers — was released in June through Graphical Recordings and Nikolaienko's own Muscut label. The album itself is stellar, boasting an eerie H.P. Lovecraft audiobook-tracking aesthetic, and the background story is equally compelling. As Nikolaienko explains:
I have been obsessed with digging, researching and listening to the archives of early electronic, library, exotica, science fiction and soviet documentary soundtracks since I released my debut album Loops & Cuts Soup in 2010 on Nexsound. Being under the influence of those themes, I decided to reinterpret and fabricate those aesthetics. As a result, I recorded The Sound Of Pseudoscience co-published by GRAPHICAL/Muscut, made a video for the track “Under The Integral,” and designed the album cover in such retrospective direction. The music is intended to sound like a library soundtrack for a scientific documentary that does not exist, that’s why many of my tracks are 2-3 minutes in length.
The early electronic influences Nikolaienko mentioned were narrowed down to the most influential of The Sound Of Pseudoscience and compiled into a mixtape. The 30 minutes below are as much a backstage tour of Nikolaienko's work as a brief, selected history of paleo electronics – take the rabbit hole! Latvian artist Martins Rokis, a member of the SHAPE platform, has been working in electronic music for well over a decade, mostly in the context of art installations, generative systems, and multichannel audio/visual performances. But he's soon releasing an EP called Wrong Headspace, which inaugurates both his side project N1L and Lee Gamble's brand new UIQ label (which is not a sub-label of PAN, as some had previously reported). In contrast to his conceptual art projects, Rokis is using N1L as an opportunity to dabble in experimental club music, exploring his perceptual predilections through sound design, immediacy, and sensation. The EP's first track, "Iguana Love Bite," kicks off this guest mix that N1L graciously sent our way. From there, his mix — titled 56.9489° N, 24.1064° E (the coordinates of Riga, Latvia) — takes us through a 45-minute fetishization of sound materiality, one that pierces, stabs, pulsates, oscillates, and drones amidst ragged, chugging rhythms and tonal sweeps. With tracks by artists ranging from Arca and Sunn O))) to chookiessss and Surgeon, as well as music from the likes of Lilerne Tapes, L.I.E.S., and PAN, Rokis somehow deftly combines a myriad of styles and approaches into a dazzling procession of sound, featuring delightfully long fades, bold layerings, and competing sound worlds that find odd cohesion in their juxtapositions. Rokis will be performing next Saturday (June 13) at a SHAPE showcase at Prague's MeetFactory and alongside Nate Wooley on July 2 at Riga's Kalnciems quarter, hosted by Skanu Mežs. S/he's a truther who owns a physical copy of The Anarchist Cookbook. S/he doesn't ironically listen to (Hed)P.E. S/he's thinking about getting a tattoo of their lyrics. And having been around for a minute (he's on fucking WTR CLR for cryin' out loud; one-half of NANNY), he's proving Baltimore ain't no place to fuck with in terms of music. I mean, okay, mostly ALL this mix was sampled outside of Baltimore, but OG Maco, YES!!!! But with the "pew pew pews" chopped in, Indian vocal caress, and various other sketches he draws with his mixing stylo, it's impossible for the Rab go wrong. And as it's only at 12-ish minutes long, repeat ON will turn into hours of listening that end with, "Holy shit, I just listened to Global Chaos I (International Style Remixes) the entire evening," only to wake up and do the same the next morning. So feel it. Fuck it! It's FRIDAY. RickRab wants your soul. Alex delivers natural-sounding speech. He is a natural. He sounds so natural. Alex has read the CIA's "torture report" in its entirety. While it took him practically no time at all, the evidence of his reading lasts more than 17 hours. His reading is deliberate and unfaltering. Alex never wonders what interrogation and torture feel like. He never says to himself, "What can I help you with?" He never says to himself, "I don't know what you mean." He never says to himself, "After something like this is done, they have given us something to think about." Alex has read a very important document. He has been initiated into enhanced measures. • Tim Terhaar: http://www.tinymixtapes.com/writer/tim-terhaar

Obviously, this opinion is skewed because I’m a girl in Chicago talking about a London happening, but it seems as if the club scene is not necessarily defined by UK garage and old school grime anymore, but on secondwave grime, club labels like Night Slugs and Her Records, and the bubbly sounds of PC Music. Or at least these are the sounds that are crossing the Atlantic and getting referenced in the club sounds of the US. This mix below is a collection of experimental sounds inspired by this phenomenon. Selections mostly come from producers who are interested in contemporary club sounds, but aren’t making tracks that are necessarily appropriate for the night club. Rather, these sounds are mostly being played on laptops, desktops, and mobile SoundCloud (most are free), which seems to be the reason the content is inspired by the aesthetics of the computer. There’s some experimental (and by experimental, I really mean arrhythmic but still with an interest in rhythm) computer stuff, some clubby computer stuff, some straight up UK club, mainstream music that’s been influenced by secondwave grime, some gay NYC bootlegs, a little Britney, and of course the Vulnicura track that most clearly shows off the Björk/Arca collaboration, who are arguably both club producers. Guest Mix: Mamiffer

One of the most common explanations for electronic voice phenomena (EVP) is cross-modulation, which is what you hear, for example, when an old record player picks up the signal of a local radio station. Parapsychologist Dr. Konstantin Raudive, who literally wrote the book on EVP, dismissed this explanation by saying that he never heard music when listening for ghosts. But even if he had, why would cross-modulation be its only possible source? Further supporting the good doctor's counter-skepticism, if spirits can indeed communicate with us from the great beyond, then who's to say that they can't perform music for us as well? Or at least play us some of their favorite tunes? And freed from the physical constraints of the material world, they'd surely have very eclectic tastes. Perhaps then their playlists would resemble the musical mindset of living, breathing, Seattle-based wife-and-husband duo Faith Coloccia and Aaron Turner, whose new Mamiffer LP Statu Nascendi sounds like it actually could've been recorded by a dead married couple. (And I mean that in the best way possible.) In compiling their guest mix for Tiny Mix Tapes, Aaron noted: "We purposely left out anything from any artists on our label — it's obvious we love and support those artists, and we were actively looking outside of that for this mix. Otherwise it might've been mostly SIGE bands!" I'd only add that this mix is best enjoyed through headphones at night in complete darkness, and if while listening you experience any instances of EVP, try not to panic. If you do, Tiny Mix Tapes shall not bear any responsibility for whatever happens next.
