History is in the making at Piedmont College, where the play “Lillian Smith’s Strange Fruit” is returning to the stage 70 years after its Broadway premiere. The play is based on Smith’s bold debut novel as it follows an interracial relationship in a small 1920s Georgia town and speaks to the effects of hate and separation on the lives of people and their communities. Thom Fogarty, Artistic director of the New York repertory theatre company 360repco, revised and restored the play to as close a representation of the original as possible. He joins me in the studio to discuss the play’s rebirth and upcoming performances on October 1-3 at 7:30 p.m. and October 4th at 2 p.m. in the Swanson Center Mainstage Theater on Piedmont College Demorest Campus.

Sitting atop a nestled tree grove overlooking Lake Burton, the Historic Lake Rabun Hotel still reflects the Adirondack charm and tranquility the original owner a German immigrant named August Andre wanted his guests to experience when coming to retreat in this area surrounded by nature's beauty. As you approach the entrance of the hotel, to the right of the natural rock covered pathway sits a picturesque small gurgling waterfall. Once inside the hotel, a black baby grand sits to the right of the lobby appointed with much of the original furnishings crafted by the first owner. Rustic charm is the theme reflected by this retreat oasis along the lake. Here visitors are given a chance to unplug from technology and reconnect with each other and the natural elements in nature. The Lake Rabun Hotel management and staff are like family here and they extend that same sentiment to their guest and the surrounding community through partnering philanthropy projects with the Food Bank of NEGA and sourcing their meals from local farmers and businesses. Our visit to the hotel opens as Restaurant Manager Joshua Addis shares from the Foxfire tradition, the early history of the Lake Rabun Hotel.
