Wisconsin's Door County "Cherryland" and Apples Too
Cherries and apples have been an integral part of Wisconsin's ...
Cherries and apples have been an integral part of Wisconsin's Door County Peninsula for close to 150 years. At one time Door County was the country's largest producer of cherries with an annual harvest of more than 50 million pounds, and the realm became fondly known as Cherryland. Cherries are still king in the county and you'll have no problem finding cherry pie, cherry wine, cherry juice, dried cherries, cherry French toast for breakfast, and bushel loads of fresh cherries to munch fresh off the tree. I'm correspondent, Tom Wilmer, come along and join me in Door County for an exploration of everything cherry as well as the fresh apples. We'll start our visit at the Door County Historical Museum in downtown Sturgeon Bay where we'll join Assistant Curator, Ginny Hain. And then it's off to Seaquist Orchards for a visit with eighty-something Dale Seaguist, who's family has been producing sweet and tart cherries for close to 130 years—not long after his grandfather emigrated from Sweden. Seaquist Farms is a family-run operation, and at present the sixth generation is being groomed to take their turn at the helm. And then it's off to visit with apple grower, Steve Wood at his family run, Wood Orchard Market in Egg Harbor. And a visit to Cherryland's iconic Wilson's Restaurant and Ice Cream Parlor in Ephraim, Wisconsin, where Seaquist Orchards' fresh cherries are a house specialty. FDR's "Floating White House" USS Potomac Home Ported in Oakland CA
The USS Potomac served as the President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's ...
The USS Potomac served as the President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's "Floating White House" from 1936 until his death in 1945. How the USS Potomac came to reside in Oakland, California is a fascinating journey. Following a ten year stint as a Coast Guard patrol boat, the Potomac saw duty as a Caribbean ferry, Elvis Presley private yacht, and a stint as a drug smuggler that ultimately led to its sinking while tied up on Treasure Island. The Oakland Port Authority purchased the derelict USS Potomac and spent more than fourteen years, and six million dollars painstakingly restoring Roosevelt's Presidential Yacht. Today the vessel is a registered National Historic Landmark, berthed at Oakland's Jack London Square and offers regularly scheduled San Francisco Bay cruises. Join correspondent, Tom Wilmer aboard the USS Potomac for a visit with the 1st Mate, the ship's Captain, and one of the volunteer historians. Washington D.C. Cabbie Stories
When I travel, I often learn more about the pulse ...
When I travel, I often learn more about the pulse beat of a place--an unfiltered, from the heart perspective--from the cabbies than I do from the local tourism officials. I'm in Washington D.C. now, and a bonus of visiting with cabbies here, is that I hear cool tales about where they grew up, and it's often a far off, exotic land, as was the case when I hung out with Samuel Issac who was raised in Ethiopia. Samuel and I had so much fun talking about his life in America, that he refused to accept payment for the cross-town cab ride from Dupont Circle to the Capital Mall. Regretfully, I was so engrossed in living in the moment with Samuel that it didn't occur to me to record Samuel's tales until moments after he pulled away from the curb. The next afternoon, Alexander Berko picked me up in front of NPR headquarters for a cab ride out to National Airport. This time I was locked and loaded, and Berko agreed to let me record his D.C. Cabbie stories, including the dark days of the 1980s when DC was known as the Murder Capital, about former Mayor Marion Barry, and the struggles that traditional cabbies face by brutal competition from Uber and Lyft, and most importantly his passionate pride for D.C. I'm Tom Wilmer, come along and join me in Berko's cab as he talks story about his life in D.C., since emigrating from Ghana 38 years ago.
